The story of Kedarnath

Legend says the Pandavas came to the Himalaya after the Mahabharata war, seeking Lord Shiva's forgiveness. Shiva took the form of a bull to avoid them and sank into the earth, and the hump of the bull is worshipped at Kedarnath as a triangular, self-manifested lingam. The other parts appeared at the four other Panch Kedar temples: Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar.

The present stone temple is believed to date from the time of Adi Shankaracharya, whose samadhi lies behind it. It survived the 2013 floods, sheltered, as pilgrims believe, by the large rock now worshipped as Bheem Shila.
